Vincent August Caslavka was born August 31, 1893, on a farm two miles north and one mile east of Clutier, Iowa. He was one of twelve children; (he had nine brothers and two sisters), of Joseph and Anna (Dostal) Caslvaka, whose story is given separately. He attended Oneida #9 rural school for about seven years and then went to work on the family farm. He worked on the farm for several years until starting to farm for himself about 1914 on the family farm. His mother passed away when he was four years old on September 5, 1897. His father passed away October 13, 1914. Vincent A. married Mary Vorba of the Gladbrook, Iowa area, the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Kvidera) Vorba, on October 10, 1916 at St. Paul Catholic Church, Traer, Iowa. Joseph and Mary Vorba farmed near Traer, Iowa until they moved to Anthon, Woodbury County, in western Iowa, where they bought and farmed a 160 acre farm. This is where Mary (Vorba) Caslavka was born September 23, 1897. In 1903 they sold that farm and moved to the Gladbrook area in Tama County, where they bought and farmed a 160 acre farm. They sold this farm and moved to Traer, Iowa in the fall of 1916. Except for her first six years, it was on this farm that Mary was raised. After Vincent A. and Mary were married they continued farming the family farm. They were the parents of two sons, Vincent G. and Warren, whose stories are given separately. In April, 1922, they purchased the farm and made that their home until 1944, when they retired from farming and moved to Traer. Their son Vincent G. took over the farm. In March, 1945, Vincent A. was seriously injured in a car accident and spent most of the year recuperating. From 1946 to 1950 he helped his son Warren in his farming operation. In 1950 he went to work for Warren in a feed store operation in Traer and worked there until 1970 when failing health forced him to retire completely. He had two heart attacks and three strokes during the next few years along with other health problems, which finally required that he be admitted into a nursing home in the fall of 1973. He spent five years there, the last three years as an invalid until October 23, 1978, when he passed away. He was laid to rest in St. Paul's Catholic Cemetery, at Traer with Rev. John Roskopf officiating. Mary still resides in her home at 903 Meyer Street, Traer at the age of 89. She has a lady living with her, assisting with household duties. Vincent A. enjoyed fishing, hunting, bowling and watching sports. Mary is a member of St. Paul's Rosary Society, American Legion Auxiliary, Senior Citizens and enjoys gardening and flowers. In earlier years while on the farm, she was an active charter member of the Oneida Round About Club of her neighborhood. Vincent A. and Mary have been members of St. Paul Catholic church since living in Traer. Prior to that, they were members of Immaculate Conception Church, Clutier, Iowa.
