Mounted Police Officer Francis Gaynor died as the result of cancer that he developed following his assignment to the search and recovery efforts at the World Trade Center site following the 9/11 Terrorist Attacks.

Officer Gaynor had served with the New York City Police Department for 28 years.

Francis A. Gaynor of Warwick, NY, passed away peacefully with his loving family by his side on January 18, 2023 following his courageous battle with cholangiocarcinoma resulting from his 9/11 service. He was 50 years old.

Born in Queens, NY on December 11, 1972, he was the son of Dennis and Trudy Gaynor.

Frank was an active duty police officer with the NYPD. He was a first responder at the 9/11 attack and during the time following as part of the rescue and recovery efforts. He volunteered his time with the Boy Scouts and was an Eagle Scout himself, loving all the characteristics that scouting helps to reinforce in young people. Francis was an avid historian and collector of many things including NYPD, Scouts, and military historical memorabilia.

Frank was a parishioner at St. Stephen RC Church.

Frank is survived by his devoted wife of 22 years, Lori Gaynor; two daughters Theresa Van Keuren of Montgomery, NY, and Melanie "Mel" Gaynor of Warwick; son Sean Gaynor of Warwick; grandchildren Jackson and Kayla Van Keuren; parents Dennis and Trudy of Forest Hills, NY; and brother Dennis F. Gaynor, Jr. also of Forest Hills, NY.

The family will receive friends on Monday, January 23rd from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Lazear-Smith & Vander Plaat Memorial Home, 17 Oakland Avenue, Warwick, NY.
