OBITUARY-THE TABLE ROCK ARGUS
NOVEMBER 9, 1939

John D. Cox was born in Savanna, Ill., April 6, 1861, and departed this life Oct. 30, 1939, at the home of his foster daughter, Mrs. Leon Beers in Lincoln, Nebr., having attained the age of 78 years, 6 months and 24 days.
About 1884 he came to south eastern Nebraska, working until 1901 as a farm hand. March 24, 1901, in Humboldt, Nebr., John Cox was united in marriage to Sarah E. Dennis. They lived on a farm west of Table Rock most of the time, until the death of Mrs. Cox, which occured in 1916.
A prominent characteristic in the lives of Mr. & Mrs. Cox, began in the early life of Mrs. Cox, and continued on through out the life of Mr. Cox, and will live on and on in the lives of those to whom they so tenderly ministered.
In her younger life Mrs. Cox responded to the need of homeless ones and in her ministry of helpfullness, she prepared herself for a teacher, and in this way was able to carry on for those who needed. After her marriage her husband shared with her and their home became a haven for needy ones. This striking incident took place. A girl for whom Mrs. Cox cared, later at her death, left three daughters, and the Cox home received them in kindly ministry.
In 1916 he moved to Lincoln, and for about 15 years Mr. Cox was employed by the American Express Compnay. For the past four years he spent his summers with Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Davakos of Table Rock.
In 1913 Mr. Cox united with the Presbyterian church. he always lived a quiet Christian life. He was "Uncle John" to all who knew him. For the past several months he has been bedfast and was a very patient sufferer. His end came peacefully.
No near relatives are left but Mrs. Alma Applegate and Mr. and Mrs. Leon Beer and their three children are here and are to him as his own children. They are, with a wide circle of friends are made sad today, because of his passing. Funeral services were held last Wednesday.
