Charles Gardner Hart was one of the sons of Pipestone County Star founder and publisher Isaac Leggett Hart and Mary Ellen Gardner Hart. Charles was born in Eldora, Iowa, and participated in the family's move to the very new town of Pipestone, Minnesota, where his father had decided to start a newspaper. He grew up in the family business, graduated from Pipestone High School, and except for a brief stint at the Winona Morning Independent in Winona, Minnesota, worked at the Pipestone Star his entire life. He was, throughout his life, a dedicated member of the Pipestone Volunteer Fire Department.

He married Anna Thrun (1879-1962), the daughter of Prussian immigrant printer Albert Thrun, in 1910. They had no children. Anna and her parents are also buried at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Winona.
