Erling Sanborn Walseth passed away peacefully on April 25, 2008, at the age of 95 in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania.

Erling was born on February 21st, 1913, at the family home in Clear Lake, South Dakota. The second of four sons born to Grace Helen (Sanborn) Walseth and Einer Einerson Walseth, Erling graduated Valedictorian in Clear Lake High School's class of 1931. Among his classmates was Salutatorian Ruth Irene Woolworth, who eventually became his wife.

Following high school, Erling obtained an undergraduate engineering degree at South Dakota State University in Brookings before pursuing his Master's in Civil Engineering at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. Upon graduation, he worked first at Lockheed and then he moved to Mobil Oil where he stayed for more than 30 years.

During World War II, Erling served in the Army Corps of Engineers where he was stationed in the South Pacific. He achieved the rank of Lt. Colonel and continued to serve in the Army Reserves.

Once discharged from the Army, Erling returned to Mobil Oil where he worked until he retired. During his career the family lived in California, Wyoming, Oklahoma and Kansas. Wally eventually retired from the position of District Superintendant based in Casper, Wyoming.

Erling and Ruth enjoyed an active retirement, including golfing, fishing, traveling, skiing and annual visits to Clear Lake to spend time with relatives and visit the land and other memories from his past.

Erling is preceded in death by his wife of over 50 years, Ruth Irene (Woolworth) Walseth and brother Tracy Sanborn Walseth; both were natives of Clear Lake, South Dakota.

Surviving him are two brothers, Harvey Sanborn Walseth of San Diego, California, and Curtis Sanborn Walseth of Vancouver, Washington; the couple's two children, William David Walseth of Laramie, Wyoming, and Joan Walseth Purcell of Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania; son-in-law Francis Jerome Purcell, Jr.; grandchildren Erin Purcell Hughes, Francis Jerome Purcell, III, and Andrew Walseth Purcell. Erling also lived to know five great-grandchildren: Vivienne Hughes, Liam Purcell (who predeceased him), Ruby Hughes, Dermot Purcell and Wren Purcell.

Funeral service will be Thursday, May 1, 2008 at the Houseman Family Funeral Home in Clear Lake, SD.

Burial with Military Honors presented by Charles Curry American Legion Post #49 of Clear Lake, SD will be in the Lakeview Cemetery, Clear Lake, SD.
