Son of Littleton and Lucy (Childs) Johnston. Married Jane Gaines 12 Dec 1816 in Elbert County, Georgia. She was the daughter of Hierome and Ann Thompson (Adams) Gaines. They were in Randolph Co., GA by 1850 in that portion which later became Terrell County in 1856. James and Jane (Gaines) Johnston had at least 8 known children -

F. Salatha E. (b. 1837, d. 1858) md. Jesse T. Davis
G. Wiley J. (b. ca 1838, d 1862). He died in the War near Murfreesboro, TN.
H. Martha F. (b. 1840, d. 1881) md. A. J. Whitlock. She died in Broward Co., FL.
It has been incorrectly reported that he died in Nov/Dec 1863. However, his two oldest sons became executors of his estate in Feb 1863 and returns indicated his coffin was purchased in 1862.
According to the "History of Terrell County, Georgia", the Johnston family cemetery is located near Herod, though its exact location is not currently known. It is likely that James and Jane (Gaines) Johnston are buried there, as well as several of their immediate descendants and spouses.
