NAPPANEE - Melvin J. Schmucker, 87, of 135089 N. 600 W., died at 8:43 a.m. Monday, April 28, in his residence after complications from surgery. He was born May 27, 1920, in Nappanee, to Jacob and Amanda Weirich Schmucker.

He married Mattie Frye on March 18, 1943, in Warsaw. He lived his lifetime in Nappanee and was a winter resident of Pinecraft in Florida for 20 years. He was a member and retired deacon in the Old Order Amish Church. He was a retired carpenter and farmer.

He is survived by his wife, Mattie; four sons, Robert (Freida) Schmucker and Marvin Ray (Cathy) Schmucker of Milford, Harley Wayne (Linda) Schmucker of Anderson and Jerry Lee (Sarah Ellen) Schmucker of Nappanee; two daughters, Joan (Mervin Jay) Weaver and Rosetta (Devon) Troyer, both of Nappanee; 41 grandchildren and 74 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Maynard Schmucker; four grandsons and four great-grandchildren; brothers, Ezra and Edward Schmucker; and by sisters, Iva Slabaugh, Sarah Chupp, Mattie Schrock and Lydia Mae Miller.

Friends may call in the Jerry Schmucker residence (6044 W 1350 N) after 2 p.m. today and all day on Wednesday. Funeral services will be in the Mervin Weaver residence (6146 W. 1250 N) at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, May 1st. The Home Ministry of the Old Order Amish Church will officiate and burial will be at West Union Cemetery, Nappanee. Arrangements are with Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home, Nappanee.
