A Loudoun County native Charles Henry Samuel Bettis was the son of the late Clarence M. Bettis and Gracie E. Gray Bettis. Charles served in the US Army during World War II: served as PFC with the co c 277th Engineer Battalion and Graves Registration Tec. He received a good conduct medal, a European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon, Arm Corporation Medal (Germany), and World War II Victory Ribbon. Charles started working for Whitmore and Arnold at age 16, after serving his country he continued to work there which later became Browning Equipment. He worked as a mechanic and a welder. He worked in the same corner for 69 years. He was preceded by his loving wife Violet V. Wenner Bettis. Also, two brothers John and Paul Edward Bettis and one sister Dianna Jean Morris. He is survived by 5 children Charles M. Bettis Sr. and wife Neely, Mary L. Penwell and husband Gary, and Patricia A. Bettis all of Harpers Ferry WV. Also Westley E. Bettis Sr. of Berkeley and Ronald (Andy) Bettis of Frederick, MD. 9 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, and 3 great great grand children. He is also survived by 1 brother Marshall Bettis and 4 sisters Jane Fry, Dorthy Furr, Pearl Crouch and Alice McIwee and husband Wayne. He also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, and many many friends. The family will receive friends Tuesday November 22nd at Hall Funeral Home of Purcellville from 6-8 p.m. A service will be held at the funeral home Wednesday November 23rd at 1 p.m. with interment following in Hillsboro Cemetery.
