Mary was the oldest child of Abram Wooten and Nancy Mote who married on 9 Nov 1853 in Habersham Co GA. She had 2 younger siblings: Frances and Aaron. Aaron was named after his paternal grandfather Aaron Wooten who was born in SC about 1808/1812.

Mary's father had one full younger brother, Joseph W Wooten. Joseph and Abram were the sons of Aaron Wooten and his first wife whose name is unknown. She died before 1850 in SC before Aaron & his sons removed to GA. Aaron had the unusual distinction of having been enumerated 3 times on the 1850 census. On 6 Sep 1850, he and his 2 sons were enumerated in Greenville Co SC. On 15 Sep 1850 Habersham Co GA, Aaron is enumerated in the household of Joseph & Tabitha Waldrep, parents of Mahulda "Hulda" Waldrep who had just become Aarons's 2nd wife on 8 August 1850. She was born about 1823 in SC. Aaron was enumerated a 3rd time on 7 Dec 1850 in Habersham Co with his wife, Hulda, and his 2 sons, Abram & Joseph.

Aaron died before 1860 when Hulda Wooten is found living in Habersham Co in the household of her parents. Also in the household is her son, Benjamin Wooten, at age 8. In 1870 Hulda Wooten is again found in Habersham living in the household of her widowed mother. Also in the household is Hulda's son, Benjamin Wooten at age 18. In 1880 Habersham Co, Hulda Wooten is listed as widowed mother in the household of Benjamin, age 28, & Judeth (Williams) Wooten who had married on 9 Aug 1870.

Two main conclusions can be drawn from the above facts. First is that the birth year is incorrect on Benjamin's headstone as many are. He was born in 1852, not 1850. Also, he is not the brother of Mary as currently linked. He is her half-uncle. A third thing that should be pointed out is that Benjamin was not married to Delia Wooten. She was his daughter. Her marker also has an incorrect birth year. She was born in 1878 or 1880, but not 1873. She is clearly listed with him & Judeth on the 1900 census listed as daughter at age 22 but she is listed between James W born in 1879 and Georgia born in 1882. After Judeth died, Delia is clearly listed as daughter, age 32, in Benjamin's 1910 household and daughter at age 40 in Benjamin's 1920 household. The current memorial manager denied an edit request to make corrections to Delia's name and link on her memorial.
