James LEE was the son of
• David LEE Jr. (1785-1816) &
Mary CONE LEE BEST (1787-1962).
James, the oldest son of their six children, was just nine years old when his father was murdered.

James was the husband of Mary E. ANDERSON, and they were the parents of ten children, born 1827-1851:

Sarah Elizabeth LEE (1827-1862), who became the first wife of David Isaiah ARCHER in 1848,
James David LEE (1830-1907), who married Elvira Amanda EDWARDS in 1850 in Effingham County,
• Paul LEE, born about 1834 and died between 1850 and 1860,
Dr William J. LEE (1835-1860),
• Joseph M. LEE Sr. (1838-1903, died in Waycross, Ware County), who married Alice WILSON, "Alzada," of Effingham County in 1861,
• Mary Ella A. LEE, born 1841, became the first wife of William Penn MORGAN in 1857 in Effingham County,
Frances Kesiah LEE (1843-1879), the wife, first of George W. M. NEWTON in 1861, and then of her cousin, David Lee AMBROSE after the war,
Virginia V. LEE (1846-1898), the wife of Solomon Elston MARSH Sr.,
• Laura A. LEE, born 1848, the wife of William L. FALLIGANT, and
Thomas A. LEE (1851-1898), the husband of Sarah C. DENTON, "Sallie."

In the late 1820s (when he became of age) and during the 1830s, James LEE was the administrator for:
- the estate of his brother, Joseph LEE,
- the estate of his wife's father, Hezekiah B. ANDERSON, and
- the estate of his wife's uncle, James ANDERSON,
and guardian for:
- the estate of his sister, Mary LEE PARKER,
- the estates of his wife's little sisters, Caroline M. ANDERSON KENNEDY FARMER, Adelia Frances ANDERSON BURNES, and Hezekiah Ann ANDERSON LEE, and
- the estate of his niece, Joseph Ann Elizabeth LEE COX COX, "Joanna" (1832-1895).
