He served as Calhoun County Circuit Clerk, and later in the Mississippi Legislature. With John Byrd Going he established The Calhoun Monitor in Pittsboro in 1900. The paper was later combined with The Dixie Herald, established by Mr. Going in Pittsboro and later moved to Calhoun City. The two papers became The Monitor-Herald in Calhoun City. About 1904 T. M. Murphree added a section to the early history of Calhoun County written by Joseph S. Ryan, the first Probate Clerk of Calhoun County, beginning at the point where Judge Ryan's section ended, and The Calhoun Monitor published the Ryan and Murphree "History of Calhoun County, Miss." at Pittsboro, MS in 1904.
