He was an early Free Will Baptist minister in the western part of NC and eastern Tennessee, along with Revs. Garrett Deweese and John Wheeler, establilshing churches from the scattered settlers between the mountains. He was an esteemed spiritual leader among them. Later, he was associated with Rev. Wm. B. Woolsey, in his early work forming churches into the Toe River Association of FWB. (see online "My Free Will Baptist Woolsey Family" by Rev. Paul H. Woolsey, pub. 1949). They endured many hardships, along with their families, but were of the true pioneer sturdy stock.
