Mary D. Smith, age 87 of Kell, passed away on Sunday, February 18, 2024 at Greentree Memory Care in Mt. Vernon.

Mary was born on January 6, 1937 in Salem, Illinois the daughter of William T. and Martha Ellen (Jones) Crain. She married James F. Smith on July 18, 1955 in Salem, Illinois and after spending 54 years united in marriage, he preceded her in death on July 23, 2009.


She was preceded in death by her parents, William T. and Martha Crain; her husband James Smith; her son, Frederick L. Smith; and five brothers, Galen, George, Jule, William Jr. and Johnny Crain.

Mary was unwavering in her Christian Faith. She served as the Deputy Treasurer for Marion County for 25 years. She liked watching St. Louis Cardinals Baseball, but her favorite pastime was planting and working with her flowers.

Graveside services for Mary D. Smith will be held on Thursday, February 22, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at East Lawn Cemetery in Salem, with Dr. Andy DeWitt officiating. Memorial contributions can be made to the St. Jude's Children's Hospital and will be received at Crouse Funeral Home in Salem who is assisting the family with arrangements.
