James Thomas Snow served in Company A, 3rd Regiment, Alabama Cavalry during the Civil War, and in his later years he belonged to the Monroe County Chapter of Confederate Veterans. His first marriage was to Louisa Shell, a native of Randolph County, Georgia, and they were the parents of five children: Andrew, Franklin, Alice, Mary, and John Thomas. After Louisa's death he married Annie Wiggins, and they were the parents of one son, James Terry Snow.

James Snow was the son of Rev. James Snow III and his 1st wife, Susannah (Easterling) Snow. Susannah died in 1842 so her son was born in 1841 and not 1847.
