Douglas M. Hissom Obituary

As a self-described "political writer, bartender/philosopher", you always knew where Doug stood on issues. He greatly enjoyed writing and journalism. From his time at UW-Milwaukee writing for the UWM Post, through his writing career at the Shepherd Express, Waukesha Freeman, Baltimore Post-Examiner, and as a freelance writer, as a lifelong resident of the Milwaukee area he had strong opinions on local issues and politics. His thoughts on journalism were that "I love to write and consider myself very good at it, covering a gamut of topics and types of the written word."

He also spent many years bartending and cooking in environments from high volume to fine dining to corner bars, not to mention being a freelance pizza maker at some great local pizza restaurants.

He had a great love of the outdoors and a mellow background as a fan of the Grateful Dead. He would disappear every June on weeks-long canoe trips through the boundary waters. He liked canoeing so much that he and a friend paddled the 51 miles across Lake Michigan in 26 hours without any support boats.

He will be greatly missed.

Doug is survived by brother Russell (Rita), nephews/nieces Patrick (Monique), Amanda, Rose, and Rory, grandnieces Sylvia, Ariana, and Ellie, and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Vivian Hissom, and brother, Bruce.

Services will be held on June 21, 2023, at Hafemeister Funeral Home (611 East Main Street, Watertown, WI) from 1:00 PM until the Memorial Service at 2:00 PM. There will be a private burial service at a later date.
