A rosary and funeral mass were held at Immaculate Heart of Mary. Burial followed in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens Cemetery, with the Rev. John Tickle officiating. Graveside services was also by VFW Post 3242.
Survivors included his wife, Elvira of Las Cruces; three sons: Alex, Ruben, Jr., and Martin all of Las Cruces; five daughters: Rita Rel of Covina, CA; Margaret Mortz of Austin, TX; Carol Barreras of Tempe, AZ, Patsy Estrada of Las Cruces, and Anita Barreras, also of Tempe; three sisters: Piedad Montoya of Pico Rivera, CA; Maria Barreras of Bakersfield, CA, and Amy Madrid of Bakersfield.
Pallbearers were Danny Montoya, Larry Montoya, George Duran, Pete Hernandez, Rudy Montoya, Charlie Montoya, Lalo Lopez, and Alex Chaves.
Honorary pallbearers were members of the VFW Post 3242, of which Barreras was a member. He was also a veteran of World War II and was retired from civil service at White Sands Missile Range.
