Elizabeth, the oldest child of her parents and an aunt of Henry David Thoreau, is one of the three unmarried daughters of John Thoreau who died, as did their father, in Concord, MA. It is almost certain that Elizabeth and unmarried sisters Mary and Sarah who died in Concord are buried in the White, Kettell, & Thoreau tomb in the Old Hill Burying Ground in Concord, MA. Elizabeth's father, John Thoreau, is buried here since he is the only Thoreau directly related to the Kettell family by virtue of his second marriage (with only a child that did not survive one day). The Old Hill Burying Ground pre-dates Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Concord, MA where the family of Henry David Thoreau are buried.

Henry Thoreau refers to Elizabeth in his Journal entry of January 23, 1858 where he refers to the family story of Elizabeth being led into school in Boston, MA by her mother "so small that she could not tell her name distinctly, but spoke thick and lispingly, -- 'Elizabeth Orrock Thoreau.' "

Elizabeth and her sisters Jane and Maria were charter members of the Trinitarian Congregational Church in Concord, which broke off from the Unitarian First Parish in 1826.

Elizabeth and her sister Sarah ran a boardinghouse in part of what is now the Colonial Inn in Concord, MA.
