Marie G. Welke, daughter of Walter and Bernice Ballert, passed away peacefully on Feb. 3, 2024, at Oakwood East Hospice Care.
She was a devoted mom, loved reading, gardening and home improvement. She enjoyed annual fishing trips to Canada with her husband, son and close family friends. She was a good friend and neighbor, always helping others in any way. As a teen she worked at her family's diners in Portage and Clinton, and later at Jackson Clinic in Madison. Once retired, she enjoyed more travel including a bucket list trip to Alaska.
Marie is survived by her son, John (Nancy) M. of Sun Prairie; sister, Lorraine Schmitz; daughter, Janet (John) Jones; stepdaughter, LuAnn (Rick) Gallagher of Arena; foster son, Daniel Hoppenjan of Darlington; and eight grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, John P. Welke, Jr.; and parents.
