William was the son of John Elias and Mary Frances (Dooley) Burkhart. His mother died in 1903.
He married Wilmina Vaughan in Newton, Missouri on Nov. 18, 1897. They migrated to Los Altos, CA where William owned a farm. They had six children. His father and uncle, Jessie S. Burkhart, also lived in the area.
His widow died in April 1940, only a few months after his death.
