Marion Barger Tidwell
February 3, 1925 – February 1, 2024

Marion Barger Tidwell peacefully passed away on February 1, 2024, just days shy of her 99th birthday.

She was born on February 3, 1925, in Kiowa, Okla., to Ebenezer Floyd Barger and Eliza Elaine (Ettie) Russell Barger. Marion, along with her parents and brother, Eugene, later moved to Maypearl, Texas, where her family owned a dry goods store. Her love for the store instilled in her the value of hard work. After her father's passing in 1955, when the store closed, it was discovered that a significant amount of outstanding credit had been extended to customers during times of need, and was the foundation of Marion's kindness (you never left her home without eating).

Marion graduated from Maypearl High School in 1942 and then ventured out on her own, moving to Dallas to attend business school—an unconventional decision for an 18-year-old single woman at the time. Marion joined the corporate office of Sears & Roebuck, not only earning a paycheck but also obtaining her first "charge plate." Proudly displaying the metal plate with her name, she considered it a symbol of the independence that was rare for women during that era.

In 1948, at the USO in Dallas, Marion met Lewis "Buddy" Tidwell, a dashing ex-Navy Coxswain. They married on January 16, 1949, and were inseparable for 62 years until Buddy's passing in April 2012. Settling in Irving, Texas, with their two sons, Marion joined Buddy at the aerospace firm Chance Vought (later Ling-Temco-Vought and now a part of Lockheed Martin) in the inventory department in 1958. Balancing work and family wasn't always easy, but she navigated it with grace, ultimately ascending to the position of supervisor before retiring in 1986.

During their retirement, Marion and Buddy traveled coast-to-coast in a fifth-wheel travel trailer, creating lasting memories with family and friends through card games along the way. At home, they devoted their time to volunteering at the local food bank and were active members of the First Baptist Church in Irving. After Buddy's passing, Marion found solace in her church family, particularly the Evergreen senior group. In 2022, she relocated to Bradenton, Fla., to be closer to family.

Marion's passing leaves a void, but her family takes comfort in the knowledge that she is now reunited with those who preceded her in death.

She is survived by her sons: Mitt (Shelia Stuckey) Tidwell of Sarasota, Fla., and Steve (Sue) Tidwell of Temecula, Calif. Grandchildren: Russell (Millie) Tidwell of Grapevine, Texas; Mittsy (Tim) Kessler of Chattanooga, Tenn.; and Kevin Tidwell of San Diego, Calif. Great-grandchildren: Emilia Tidwell and Dexter Kessler.

Marion will be laid to rest alongside Buddy at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Crisis Food Ministry (Crisis-Ministries), 114 E. 2nd Street, Irving Texas, 75060, or First Baptist Church of Irving, 403 S. Main St., Irving, Texas, 75060.
