Edythe was born in London to Frederick and Kate Graves. The family immigrated to Whittier, CA when she was young. She graduated from Pomona College in 1916, and completed one year of graduate school at the University of California before becoming a teacher.

On July 8, 1919, she married Karl Montague Cowdery in Whittier. The removed to Palo Alto, CA where Mr. Cowdery finished his schooling. In 1923, she organized the school for children at the Stanford Convalescent Home.

They had two children Richard Graves and Dorothy Cowdery.
