After the war she moved to Fowler, Kansas, to teach at Lincoln Grade School. It was at the Fowler Methodist Church that she met her future husband, Don Hildebrand. They married in 1948 and together operated a farm and ranch north of Fowler for over 50 years. They had two children, Susan and Dean, who preceded her in death.

She was active in her church and community, assuming leadership roles in the Fowler Methodist Church, the Meade County Historical Society, the Kansas Angus Association, the B-Busy 4-H Club, Kansas Master Farmers and Homemakers, and Meade County Extension Home Demonstration (Club!) among others. She was an accomplished seamstress and quilter and was a member of a local quilting group.
Don and Evelyn traveled to all 50 states as well as Mexico, Central America, Canada and Europe. They liked learning about new places and enjoyed the comradery on bus tours around the nation.

She was preceded in death by her parents, four siblings and a son, Dean Hildebrand.
