Evelyn Hildebrand, age 100 years, passed away on Tuesday, January 30, 2024.

She was born on October 31, 1923 in Sterling, Kansas, the fourth child of Champ and Mary (Thompson) Myers. She grew up on a farm near Sterling and graduated from Sterling High School. After completing a teacher training course at Sterling College she taught school in Macksville, Kansas. During World War II she worked as a dental assistant at a German POW camp in Lawton, Oklahoma. After the war she moved to Fowler, Kansas, to teach at Lincoln Grade School. It was at the Fowler Methodist Church that she met her future husband, Don Hildebrand. They married in 1948 and together operated a farm and ranch north of Fowler for over 50 years. They had two children, Susan and Dean, who preceded her in death.

Evelyn was gentle and unassuming, a hard worker and always a peacemaker. She was active in her church and community, assuming leadership roles in the Fowler Methodist Church, the Meade County Historical Society, the Kansas Angus Association, the B-Busy 4-H Club, Kansas Master Farmers and Homemakers, and Meade County Extension Home Demonstration (Club!) among others. She was an accomplished seamstress and quilter and was a member of a local quilting group.

Don and Evelyn traveled to all 50 states as well as Mexico, Central America, Canada and Europe. They liked learning about new places and enjoyed the comradery on bus tours around the nation.

Evelyn is survived by a daughter, Susan Russell (Bill), a grandchild Scott Russell (Selina), a step-grandchild Matthew Russell (Angela) and 7 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, four siblings and a son, Dean Hildebrand.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, February 2, 2024, at the Fowler Friends Church. Interment will follow in the Fowler Cemetery. The family welcomes memorials to the Fowler Residential Care Center in care of Fidler-Orme-Bachman Funeral Home.
