The family of Gladys Bickell Hewitt is filled with great sadness to announce her peaceful passing in the early morning hours on Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2020, in her home of 53 years in Fairfield, California.

Gladys Bickell Hewitt's story starts on June 11, 1928, in Stillwater, Oklahoma, with her parents, Benjamin Harrison Bickell and Ruby Folsom Pratt.

When Gladys was just 14 years old her mother and father moved their family to Fairfield, California. She went on to graduate from Armijo High School in 1946.

A few months later while traveling, riding a greyhound bus, she met her soon-to-be husband, Robert Woodrow Hewitt. From then on, the two were inseparable and married on June 8, 1947. They went on to build their family and have two daughters, Robin (Cacioppo) and Susan (Bentley).

Gladys was employed as a telephone operator for the Pacific Telephone Company and Pacific Gas & Electric. She loved to travel, shop, dance, sing and was in many Kiwanis Club shows as well as shows with the City of Fairfield Senior Center.

One of her favorite, most memorable trips was when she and Robert spent their 25th wedding anniversary in Paris.

Gladys would do anything for her family and made it her mission to make sure that all children of the family were cared for. She was the true definition of a classy lady with style and grace that was all her own. She was a beautiful woman inside and out and very funny with a great sense of humor and perspective.

Gladys was without a doubt the matriarch of her family and will be missed dearly by everyone who knew her.

Gladys has left behind her two daughters, Robin Cacioppo and Susan Bentley; she also leaves behind her five grandchildren, Patricia Martin, Robert Cacioppo, Amy Bentley, Danielle Canedo (Serpas) and Clarissa Serpas-Park; along with seven great-grandchildren, Tina Martin, Abigail Bentley, Lilian Cacioppo, Gabriella Meza, Nicholas Hegedus, Josef Meza and Marianna Canedo; she will be dearly missed by her granddaughter-in- law-caregiver, Jenny Ramirez Bentley.

Gladys was preceded in death by her loving husband of 59 years, Robert Hewitt; and her parents, Benjamin and Ruby Bickell; sister, Clara Serpas, and brother, Eugene Bickell.
