John W Clark residing in Bloomfield, WI enlisted 15 Aug 1862 as Private in Co C, 22nd Inf Regt WI. Mustered out on 12 Jun 1865 at Wash DC. Regiment History: The Regiment left the state 16 Sep for Cincinnati to help defend the city for an expected attack. On Sep 31 it was assigned to the 1st Brigade, 1st Division, US Army of Kentucky. It was sent to Danville, where it engaged in pursuit of the enemy until 26 Jan 1863, when it started for Franklin, TN. On 25 Mar about 300 men were surprised while guarding the railroad at Brentwood, captured, sent to Richmond, but soon exchanged. The Regiment then moved to Nashville and in April to Lookout Valley, near Chattanooga, leaving there 3 May 1864 to take part in Sherman's Atlanta campaign. It was with the 20th corps during the siege of Atlanta 2 Sep, remaining as a garrison at Atlanta until 2 Jan 1865 when it joined Sherman in his movement to Richmond (March to the Sea), fighting in battles at Bentonville and it's last battle at Averasboro, NC. The Regiment was in grand review at Washington and mustered out 12 June 1865. During the war it lost 226 men killed and 46 to desertion.
