Violet Mae Carothers (Nelson) was born November 29, 1932 in Syre, a small town in Minnesota to Ted and Anna Nelson (Veritzan), the fourth of eight children. Her older siblings were Melvin (Bob), Pearl Hammer, and Mary Cusey. Younger siblings were Gladys Haugrud, Raymond, Marvin, and Annabelle.

She met and married James Calvin Carothers when she was 16. Together they raised five children. Sidney, Timothy, Randall, Rebecca, and Kelvin, were often described by Violet as "her life" and she lived that out, always concerned and always available to her children as she nurtured them to adulthood. As a child, Violet walked behind her father, breaking up clods of dirt as he plowed fields with a team of horses. She was only able to finish 8th grade in school, due to being needed on the farm. She saw horse and buggies give way to gas-powered cars and recently evolve into all-electric vehicles.

Violet moved to Seattle with James (and her first four children) in 1962. Soon thereafter, her youngest son Kelvin was born. As society changed and more women entered the workforce, Violet also got her first job outside of the home, working at a fresh pizza production company (Poe Foods), where her work ethic and common sense was soon rewarded with a promotion to Manager. Violet eventually helped her employers open a cheese store (The Happy Gherkin) on Capitol Hill near Group Health Hospital, where she would eventually work as a janitor. Not satisfied with the status quo, she applied to work at The Boeing Company and again, despite having only an eighth-grade education, was hired, worked hard and was recognized as a key employee and again attained a management position. Violet retired from Boeing at 62 years of age, and invested her savings in a brand-new home in 2001.

Over the last 23 years, she enjoyed her cats, and the occasional annual visit from a pair of ducks, and almost nightly visits from Hobo, a young female raccoon that brought her babies to visit and play in the kiddie pool Violet supplied.

Violet is survived by her 5 children, 6 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild, as well as her sister Mary Cusey, and many nieces and nephews spread across the country.

During the last couple years of her life, Violet Insisted that her family NOT say goodbye, but ended visits in person and by phone by saying, "Not goodbye .......... Later". For all of the people who touched her life, and in turn were touched by Violet Carothers, remember - this is not goodbye, it's only until later.
Rest in peace Violet, and Thank You Lord for taking her home.
