Jane Bell was the youngest child and fourth daughter born to William Bell and Janet Whitson. Her agreed upon birth date is August 23, 1845. She was born, like several of her siblings, in the small village of Morebattle, not too far from the abbey town of Kelso in Roxburgh, Scotland. As a young woman, she followed her older sister, Elsie, into service working as a domestic for some of Galt's wealthier families. Jane married John Gourlay in 1865 and they had seven children, six of whom lived to adulthood. In the early 1900's the family moved to Vancouver, British Columbia where Jane Bell Gourlay died after a long illness on April 3, 1917.
