WELL KNOWN LOCAL BUSINESS MAN SHOT

Then Aged Veteran Sends a Bullet Into His Own Heart, Expiring Immediately.

An attempted murder and suicide occurred in this city at 7:30 this morning, when Richard Traul, 65, a civil war veteran shot and probably fatally wounded C. H. Sawyer, secretary-treasurer of the Washington Furniture company, and then shot and killed himself.

Sawyer had lived with the Trauls at 1011 Second avenue for some two years. When the shooting occurred Sawyer was coming down the steps, and Traul stood in the yard. He fired three bullets into the other man's body, and Sawyer fell.

Thinking he had killed this man, Trual walked around the corner on Monroe street, sat down on a pile of gravel, and shot himself through the heart, dying instantly.

Spokane, Aug. 8. -C. H. Sawyer, President of the Washington Furniture company, of this city, was this morning shot three times and seriously wounded by Richard Traul, a Civil war veteran. Thinking he had killed Sawyer, Traul walked around the street corner, sat down on a pile of gravel and shot himself through the heart, dying instantly

The cause of the shooting is not definitely known, but friends of Traul say that during the war he had portions of his brain removed in an operation, after being wounded in battle, and that recently he had shown indications of insanity. Sawyer had lived at Traul's house for two years.

Note: Chauncey Sawyer recovered from his injuries and subsequently married Nancy (Logsdon) Traul, former wife of Richard, 6 Apr 1912 in Pasco, Washington.
