"OBITUARIES.
Ada Balaam Cain.
Lee B. Balaam of Compton, sent word to Mrs. Mae Ketchum last week, of the death on August 17 of his mother, Mrs. Ada Balaam Cain, just one month and a day after her 100th birthday which was on July 16. A picture in a Compton newspaper shows Mrs. Cain holding a birthday card from President Kennedy.
Funeral services were held in Compton on August 20, and interment was in the family plot in the Tulare cemetery. The former Miss Ada Bishop was born July 16, 1863, in Cambridge, Vermont, and came to Arroyo Grande with her parents, Wesley and Emily Bishop 76 years ago, in 1887, and the family lived for some years in Corbet Canyon. Miss Bishop had a dressmaking shop in Arroyo Grande prior to her marriage in 1890 to William F. "Bud" Balaam. He died in 1911. She moved to Tulare and was married there in 1914 to Charles Cain.
After his death in 1932 [January 25, 1931], Mrs. Cain maintained her home in Tulare until 1948 when she moved to Compton to live with her son and wife, Lee and Edith Balaam, at 920 East Palmer. She continued in fairly good mental and physical health until two months prior to her death when she suffered an attack of virus pneumonia, but her family was so glad she lived and was able to celebrate her 100th birthday.
Besides the son survivors are a grandson, Harold Balaam, and four great-grandsons, Robert, James, Steven and Jeffrey Balaam, all of Compton."
