After the military, he gained an interest in the fire protection industry, which he worked in for the last 50 years. Early in his career he owned his own fire extinguisher company in Washington, and then worked in Arizona and on special assignments in Canada. He finally settled and worked in Lane County, Oregon, where he was a member of ORFED, helping to write Oregon Fire Codes. As a culmination of his work, he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018 by the Oregon Fire Equipment Distributors. His wife has been known to say that he ate and slept fire extinguishers. Alva also had quite a passion for trains. He loved to ride them and belonged to a model railroad club. He was very knowledgeable and could tell you almost anything concerning trains.
Alva and his wife Shirley were married on December 26, 1987, and although it was the third marriage for both, they say that the third time's the charm!
Alva is preceded in death by his parents Glen and Era, his brother Paul, nephew John, and his stepson Randy.
He is survived by his wife of 36 years Shirley, His brother William & wife Mary. His 3 children, son Kyle, son Daniel, daughter Lesliann, stepdaughter Shelley, 5 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and nephews and nieces.
