Enlisted on 18 April 1861 for a 3-month term at Adrian, Lenawee County, Michigan at 26 years of age; mustered in 1 May 1861, Company K, 1st Michigan Volunteer Infantry Regiment as Third Sergeant; wounded in action during the 1st Battle of Bull Run, Prince William County, Virginia on 21 July 1861; mustered out on 7 August 1861 at Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan; re-entered service and commisioned on 22 August 1861, Company E, 1st Infantry Regiment as a 2nd Lieutenant; commissioned, mustered and transferred on 14 July 1862, Company D, 1st Infantry Regiment as a 1st Lieutenant; commissioned, mustered and transferred on 30 August 1862, Company F, 1st Infantry Regiment as a Captain; wounded in action on 2 July 1863 at the Battle of Gettysburg, Adams County, Pennsylvania; killed in action on 5 May 1864 at the Battle of the Wilderness, Prince William County, Virginia.

"Darius C. Bradish and my Great Grandfather, David Stanway, were both Captains in the 1st Michigan Regiment and very good friends. David Stanway was severly wounded on May 5, 1864 at the Battle of the Wilderness, the same day and battle where Captain Bradish died.
