Mary Nell Merritt, 87, passed away peacefully on December 7, 2023. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, nurse and friend who will be dearly missed by all who knew her. Nell loved her family unconditionally and had a gift of making others feel welcomed and comfortable.
Nell was born April 20, 1936 in Union Church, MS to Eston and Bertha Avants. She graduated with an Associate Degree in Nursing and worked passionately as a dedicated RN at Lane Regional Medical Center. Nell was a fabulous nurse who loved and cared for her patients and coworkers unconditionally.
She is survived by her daughters, Debbie Chelette and Susie McLendon (Mike); son Jody Allen Merritt; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, Finton Merritt; Son, Mark Alan Menitt; Parents, Eston and Bertha Avants; brother, Ernest Avants; Sister, Ann Crawford.
Relatives and friends are invited to visitation at Central Funeral Home on Monday, December 11, 2023 from 10-11 AM. A funeral service will follow visitation at 11 AM officiated by Pastor Philip Pimlott. Burial will be at Port Hudson National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to The Lodge at Lane Nursing Home for a plant in Nell's memory.
The family would also like to thank Baton Rouge Hospice and The Lodge at Lane staff for their excellent and compassionate care.
