Hubert Eugene Watt, 87, formerly of Shipman, passed away Friday, December 29, 2023 at Alton Memorial Hospital.

Born Aug. 15, 1936 in Hartford, he was a son of Hubert E. and Virginia (Bane) Watt.

A U.S. Air Force veteran, Gene worked as a foreman then a night superintendent for Olin Corp. He also worked for two years as the Public Works Director for the City of Alton. He was a member of the Franklin Masonic Lodge in Alton.

An avid sportsman, Gene enjoyed the outdoors and nature in general. He enjoyed hunting and fishing as well as bird watching. He was quite the handyman and accomplished Do-It-Yourself projects around his home. He also loved to travel.

He married the former Diana Wimberly in 1985 in Godfrey. She preceded him in death Dec. 19, 2014.

Survivors include two sons, Stephen Eugene Watt of Brighton and Robert Eric (Dorothy) Watt of Rosewood Heights; two stepdaughters, Monica Edwards of East Alton and Jessie (Danny) Hicks of Warrenton, MO; a stepson, Michael Hettick of Corpus Christi, TX; 17 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren; a sister, Virginia Howard of Excelsior Springs, MO; a brother, Stephen David (Pamela) Watt of Kansas City, MO; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife Diana, he was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Anthony Ross Watt; a sister, Sue Ellen Page; and his first wife, Louise (Hill) Richards.
