Mr. James "Mickey" Mitchum Whitaker, 73, of Lancaster, widower of Doris Elaine Childers Whitaker, passed away Wednesday, December 27, 2023, at Atrium Health - Monroe. He was born March 5, 1950, in Lancaster, a son of the late James Thomas Whitaker and Nannie Ghent Small. After graduating from high school, Mr. Whitaker joined the U.S. Army. He liked the military service, made it a career, and retired as a Seargeant with 20 years of service. Mr. Whitaker enjoyed being active and became a correctional officer with the SC Department of Corrections. He was faithful to the Lord and serves as a deacon at Grace Freewill Baptist Church.

Service to celebrate the life of Mr. Whitaker, Tuesday, January 2, 2024, at Grace Freewill Baptist Church with the Rev. Roger Anders officiating. Burial at Lancaster Memorial Park.

Mr. Whitaker is survived by a son: Jerry "Speedy" Whitaker and his fiancé Tammy Washburn of Lancaster, two daughters: Bertina Whitaker and Valisa Whitaker; a brother, Len Outen (Sandy) of Iron Station, NC; a sister, Dianne Hudson of Denver, NC; and two grandchildren, Sierra Boulware and Brandon Whitaker.
Along with his wife and parents, he is preceded in death by his step-father, Sidney Outen;
three brothers, Jimmy Whitaker, Curtis Outen, and Jerry Outen; and four sisters, Lulu Brooks, Becky Welsh, Dela Carnes and Eva Hinson.
