Alvin grew up on the family farm and attended Norton Community High School through his Junior year and then received his GED. He began working at the Tuberculosis Hospital in Norton. Alvin married Julia Ann Jimenez on May 31, 1950 in Norton. He worked as a mechanic and truck driver for Shelton Tire & Battery for 26 years and then worked for Ideal Truck Line, retiring as the Shop Foreman on December 31, 1994 after almost 28 years. Alvin was committed to serving his community; he started in 1987 as the Assistant Coordinator for Norton County Emergency Preparedness and then in 1995 became the coordinator and he also worked for the Norton Fire Department for 35 years, the last 8 years of service he was the Chief. Alvin was a member of the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed playing on a traveling bowling league, golf, and playing Bingo, he helped run the local game for 66 years.
Alvin is survived by his daughter, Virginia (Larry) Smith; two grandchildren; great grandchildren and many other family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Julia of 65 years; brothers: Tom, Ralph, and William Mapes; sister, Sarah Mapes, and son-in-law, JB Carlton.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 am Saturday, January 13, 2024 at the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Norton. Inurnment will follow in the Norton Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7:00 pm Friday, January 12, 2024 at the funeral home. A Rosary and Wake Service will follow at 7:00 pm. Memorial contributions may be given to the Knights of Columbus or St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church and sent in care of Plumer-Gobber Funeral Home, 215 W. Main St., Norton, KS 67654.
