Richard C. Daetsch
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon from the W. I Froehley Funeral Home in Lake St. for Pfc. Richard C. Daetsch, Korean war veteran, who died Friday in Buffalo General Hospital after a long Illness. The Rev. Fred M. Webber, minister of Hamburg Presbyterian Church, officiated. Burial was In Maplewood Cemetery, Springville. Private Daetsch was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Chester G. Daetsch of Pierce Ave. and a grandson of the late Willard Ticknor. He leaves besides his parents, a brother, Willard Ticknor Daetsch, two sisters, Mrs. Richard Paige Miller and Mrs. William Dougherty, all of Hamburg, and two foster sisters,Mrs. John Miller of Mt. Carmel, and Mrs Richard Mundy of Indianapolis. Pfc Daetsch was taken ill in Korea and was sent from there to Osaka, Sacramento, Walter Reed Hospital in Washington and to Buffalo General Hospital. Born in Hamburg, Feb. 25, 1928, he attended Hamburg Public Schools and Philips Andover Preparatory School. He was graduated from Harvard University in 1949, received his master's degree in Science from Cornell in 1950 and then studied at the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory in Colorado, He entered the army in Apr. 1951 and served in UNCACK, the scientific and professional unit of the United Nations. While on duty in Korea he pre pared two health pamphlets for the Republic of Korea and taught English in Pusan night school.

Sukkl Hong of Pusan, Korea, now a student at the University of Rochester Medical School, was the weekend guest of Mr. and Mrs. Chester G. Daetsch of Pierce Ave. Mr. Hong, a friend of their late son, Pvt. Richard C. Daetsch, made the acquaintance of the young Hamburg soldier when both were serving with UNCACK, the scientific and professional unit of the United Nations. Mr. Hong was a liason officer between the unit and the South Korean army. He is a graduate of the Missionary Medical College In Korea.

Note: The United Nations Civil Assistance Corps Korea (UNCACK) was a United Nations military agency which was involved in the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the Republic of Korea (ROK) during the Korean War. The primary mission of UNCACK was "the prevention of disease, starvation and unrest among the civilian population", a mission which was implemented by providing a structure through which United Nations member nations could supply food, supplies, and technical assistance to Korea in cases when it was impossible to provide financial aid.
