Melba Carolyn Whiteside Long was born on May 23, 1938, in Oakwood, Texas to Ruby and Delma Ray Whiteside. Carolyn met her husband Gaston Vernon (Slick) Long Jr. in the third grade at Dew Elementary and married him in 1954. They were blessed with four children, David Ray Long, Anita Kay Long, Derran Vernon Long, and John Paul Long. She and Slick raised their children in the Houston area, were missionaries in Paraguay, and eventually settled in Buffalo, Texas.

She loved being a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother the most and poured all her love into every child in her life. Her love for children extended as a lunch lady at Tomball Independent School District in her 50's, where she continued to help underprivileged children and made sure that they never went hungry. She and Slick were blessed with 69 years of marriage, countless arguments and make-ups, and a lifetime of love. She loved to spend time with the family that they created and made every new addition feel loved. She also loved her roses, hummingbirds, and their dog, Jack.

Carolyn was the eldest sibling and the only sister. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Lindel (Buddy) and Morris, and her parents, Ruby and Delma Ray Whiteside.

Carolyn is survived by her husband Slick Long, children David and wife Eva, Anita Kay, Derran, John Paul and wife Judy. Grandchildren: Joshua Long, Kori Long, Jason Long, Lynnette Long Fuselier, Ashley Long, Danielle Long Barrios, Victoria Long Muller, and Kaitlyn Long. Also, 13 great-grandchildren, 6 great-great grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, sisters-in-law, friends, and her special group of ladies that met monthly, Sue Jordan, Joann Barker, Marcia White, Bonnie McCeig, Charlotte Chase, Nila Smitherman, and Dixie Martin.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Dew Cemetery, P. O. Box 425, Teague, TX 75860.

A complete obituary will be posted soon.
