James Horatio Barnard, son of James Horatio Barnard and Elizabeth Mann, was born about 1834 in Saint Luke Old Street Parish in Finsbury, Middlesex County, England (according to 1851, 1861, 1871 census, and cemetery records). This is the same parish church where James' father was christened on 26 December 1805 (according to Church of England Baptisms, Marriages, and Burials records; shows James' father was born 5 October 1805).

In the 1851 census of England, James Barnard (age 16, wax flower maker) was listed in the household of his mother Elizabeth Barnard (age 44, married) at 8 Islington Place in Islington, Middlesex, along with his sister Elizabeth (age 15, wax flower maker), brother David (age 9), and Ann Dover (age 28, visitor, braid worker). Although James' mother Elizabeth was listed as being married, James' father, James Horatio Barnard, was not listed with the family (here, or anywhere later), suggesting that he may have died between the conception of James' youngest sibling David in 1841 and the 1851 census.

On 17 March 1756, James Horatio Barnard married Clara Bambury (1835-1903) at the parish church at Saint George Bloomsbury, Middlesex. The marriage record shows James' father as "James Horatio Barnard, Silk Weaver." Clara Bambury, daughter of Charles Bambury and Mary Cotton, was born about 1835 in Somers Town, Middlesex County, England (according to the 1841-1901 England census records).

In the 1861 census of England, James H. Barnard (age 26, confectioner) was living at 12 Charles Street in Mile End New Town, Middlesex. Other family members listed were his mother, Elizabeth Barnard (age 55, married, fancy shop woman), wife Clara (age 26), brother David (age 19, baker), children Clara (age 4) and James H. (age 2), and Rose Bartar (age 16, servant). James' father, James Horatio Barnard, was not listed with the family.

In the 1871 census of England, James Barnard (age 35, confectioner) was living at the corner of Essex [now Blythe] Street and O.B.G. [Old Bethnal Green] Street. Also listed in the household were his mother, Elizabeth Barnard (age 64, widow), wife "Elizabeth" [error for Clara] (age 35), and children Clara (age 14), James (age 12), Elizabeth (age 9), Amy (age 6), Edwin (age 5), John (age 3), and Emily (age 2 months). [Note: the General Register Office birth record for Emily Susan Barnard shows her birth as 20 January 1871 at 1 Essex Street, Bethnal Green, Middlesex. 1 Essex Street [now Blythe Street] was also the 1869 address for a pub known as the "Falcon" (see pubology.co.uk and https://pubshistory.com/LondonPubs/BethnalGreen/Falcon.shtml ]

The General Register Office death record shows James Horatio Barnard died 22 August 1877 (age 43, confectioner) at his home at 100 Blythe Street in the Church sub-district of Bethnal Green district, Middlesex County. The record shows he died of cerebral disease (probably a tumor, 2 years). The informant for the death record was James' son, James Horatio Barnard (1858-1927), listed as "present at death." The Abney Park Cemetery Index 2005 (online) shows that James Horatio Barnard was buried seven days later on 29 August 1877 at Grave Location H08, Abney Park Cemetery, Stoke Newington, Middlesex, England. The index entry reads "Barnard, James Horatio (aged 43) 1834-1877 (buried 29/08/1877)." [see https://www.devsys.co.uk/ap/Show_Grave.asp?GraveID=061881&Person=061912 ] James' mother, Elizabeth [Mann] Barnard (~1806-1890), was also buried at this cemetery in Grave Location F02, where she was buried with her older sister Amey Susannah Mann Tyrrell (1803-1868).

On 25 December 1888, James' wife Clara Bambury Barnard remarried to Joseph Shortland (1834-1916) at Saint Andrews Church in Lambeth Parish, Surrey County, London. In the 1891 census of England, Clara (age 56) was listed in the household of her husband, Joseph Shortland (age 57, cab driver), along with Clara's children Emily S. Barnard (age 20) and Charles J. Barnard (age 17, clerk), and Joseph's son from a prior marriage, Joseph C. Shortland (age 15, bookbinder porter). They lived at 6C Block in the Peabody Buildings in Saint Mary's Parish, Lambeth Borough, London.

In the 1901 census of England, Clara (age 66) and her husband Joseph Shortland (age 67, cab driver) were living alone at 14 Rochester Square in Saint Pancras Parish, London.

The General Register Office death record shows Clara Shortland died 12 July 1903 (age 69) at the North West London Hospital. The death was recorded in the East Saint Pancras sub-division of Saint Pancras district, County of London. The record shows Clara was the wife of Joseph Shortland, cab driver, of 30 Rochester Square, Saint Pancras. Clara died of liver cancer, exhaustion and heart failure. Clara's husband, Joseph Shortland, was the informant, listed as "present at death." [GRO Ref: SHORTLAND, CLARA, 1903 Sep Quarter in ST PANCRAS Volume 01B Page 49, Age at Death: 69]
