Ina Lorene Hardin Meadows, 73, left this earth to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, April 20, 2008, following a long illness and was surrounded with her loving family at her side as she made the journey into heaven.
Funeral: 9:30 a.m. Wednesday in Greenwood Chapel. Entombment: Greenwood Mausoleum. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Greenwood Funeral Home.
Lorene was born Feb. 17, 1935, in Fort Worth to Walter P. Hardin and Ina Mae Albright Hardin. She received 22 literary awards from several organizations, including awards for her poetry from Poets of Tarrant County and Texas Poetry Society. Composers, Authors and Artists of America presented her with awards for poetry, short story fiction, true short story and children's short story. Her poetry was published in the "Bidler Buzz," the Chicago elementary school newspaper where she attended. "Children's Activities," a children's magazine, also published some of her poetry.
A child entertainer, she appeared on stage and was heard on radio with the Dean Turner Country and Western Band. She also made personal appearances in the polio ward of John Peter Smith Hospital. She hosted a children's talent show at the Tower Theater in Fort Worth each Saturday. Then, as an adult entertainer, she appeared regularly on the Cow Town Hoedown. At age 25, Lorene retired from music and began another career. She applied and was accepted at Terrell's Laboratory School of Radiologic Technology. After successfully passing the national exam for radiologic technologists, she continued school for an additional year to complete the training for nuclear medicine technology. She passed the national exam for nuclear medicine technology in 1963. That being a new field of medical technology, she was the first woman in Texas to be certified. The last 10 years of her career she was a technical member of the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology.
As a child, she attended North Fort Worth Baptist Church, then St. Francis Village Protestant Fellowship during her retirement. Most recently she attended Fellowship Church of Fort Worth with her daughters.
Lorene was preceded in death by her husband, Joe E. Meadows.
Survivors: Daughters, Sue Hughes and husband, Tim, and Wanda Ozee and husband, Mark; son, Larry Mann; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sisters, June George and Marilyn Taylor; nieces and nephews; and her three cousins, which made up the "Fab Five," Latova Ferguson, Marie Mosier and Jaletta Cooley; adopted children, Joe E. Meadows Jr. and Patricia Everett; and stepchildren, Nanette Carlson and Darlene Sweeney.
