William Cook served in the War of 1812, Capt. Joseph Redding's Company, 1st Reg't (Scott's) Kentucky Volunteers, as reported in his pension record.

He married first to Rachel Wortman, Sept. 13, 1813, in Pendleton Co., Kentucky. She died Aug. 15, 1852 in Grant Co., Kentucky. William Cook married second to Sarah (Daugherty) Reed, Sept. 21, 1852, also in Grant Co. They continued to reside there until the latter part of the Civil War, when they moved to Bartholomew Co., Indiana. They moved around some afterward--Sarah and several of the children were in Shelby Co., Indiana in 1870, while William Cook was back in Grant Co. when the 1870 census was taken there. Nevertheless, he was residing in Bartholomew Co. when he died in 1876. Sarah died in Bartholomew Co., March 16, 1884.
