Evelyn Bernell Sheffield, 88, of Afton, passed away peacefully at Hospice of the Piedmont, UVa. She was born April 21, 1935 in Nelson County, daughter of the late Daniel George and Nellie Duncan Campbell.

Preceding her in death are her Sisters, Beth Slosson and Katherine Trent of Afton. Son-in-law, Jimmy Fretwell of Crozet. Nephew James "Chip" Slosson of Afton.

She is survived by her husband of 73 years, James P. Sheffield. Her sister Joan Young (Richard) of Spencer, NC. Daughters, Freda S. Fretwell of Crozet and Faye Mcgarva (John) of St. Louis. Grandchildren James G. Fretwell (Megan), Daniel Fretwell, and Tabitha Richmond. Great-grandchildren Isabelle and Levon Fretwell. Along with several Nieces.

Bernell, affectionately known as "Nana" to much of her family and grandchildren, was well known to spoil them with whatever they wanted. She was a great cook, a voice of support and reason, an avid reader, and a surprising artist. She loved to learn. After her daughters were in school, unable to remain complacent at home, she took classes. Learning to cut hair and opening her own salon in Afton which she owned and operated for over 20 years. A great woman of faith, Bernell enjoyed a variety of roles during her attendance at Hebron Baptist Church of Afton. A wonderful woman with a beautiful smile, she was simply a joy to be around.

Many thanks to the Doctors, Nurses, and Healthcare staff that has cared for Bernell the last several months. Able to live her final months with grace, comfort, and support.

A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, December 6 at 2:00p.m., at Hebron Baptist Church, Afton. Pastor Billy Coffey will be conducting the service. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Family and Friends may sign her virtual guestbook at www.WellsSheffield.com
