Duncan "Roy" McDonald was born near McDonalds Corners, Ontario, Canada on 7 Apr 1889 on his parents Neil Cameron McDonald and Charlotte Baker Fife's farm on Lot 1 West, Concession 11 of Dalhousie Township, Lanark County, Ontario.
On 13 Jul 1917 in Calgary Alberta, Roy enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force and at that time he was farming in the Vulcan, Alberta area. In Dec 1918, Roy was living at RR#2 Viking, Alberta and he assigned to the Canadian Expeditionary Force Siberia and left Canada on 28 Dec 1918, arriving in Siberia on 15 Jan 1919, serving in Siberia until 9 May 1919, returning to Canada later on 21 May 1919. Roy was discharge as a Private from the Canadian Army on 23 May 1919 in Calgary, Alberta.

On 12 Aug 1919, Roy applied for an Alberta Homestead at SW, Section 1, Twp 62, Range 12, Meridian 4, near McCrae, AB.
In 1933 Roy married Lillian Maude Howe in Viking, AB, they had two sons, they farmed in the Viking, AB, area.
