Born in New Castle on Nov. 1, 1934, he was the son of the late William and Cora Young Hartzell.
He was married to the former Beverly Houston for 35 years. She survives.
Mr. Hartzell was semi-retired from the Wilmington Area School District. He worked as a custodian for 15 years.
He held membership in the Bessemer Rod and Gun Club and the Mahoning Sportsman's Association.
In addition to his wife, survivors include three children, Debra Zuzow, William G. Hartzell and John R. Hartzell, all of New Castle; two brothers, Ralph Hartzell of Hillsville and Ernest Hartzell of New Castle; and four grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, John Hartzell, and a sister, Nettie Hartzell.
Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at the Noga Funeral Home, 1142 S. Mill St. A service will be conducted at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home by the Rev. Dennis Bupp. Burial will be in Castle View Memorial Gardens.
