"Obituary. Died in the town of Manchester, on the 10 th inst., at the residence of her daughter, (Mrs. Snellings) Mrs. Eliza S. Chiles, wife of Elliott Chiles, in the 62d year of her age. The deceased was a daughter of the celebrated Baptist preacher, the late Andrew Broaddus, by his first wife. She was married when quite young to her now bereaved husband, with whom she lived happily for more that forty years, having been the mother of nine children, all of whom she lived to see arrive at years of maturity. As a wife she was affectionate and kind, ever ready to share the joys and sorrows of her companion, to whom she was fondly attached. As a mother, none but her children could justly appreciate her. The chief desire of her heart seemed to be the gratification of their every wish, and when they were happy, she, too, was happy. Perhaps no mother ever labored more zealously for the present and eternal welfare of her children that did she, and we doubt not but in coming years the fond admonitions of a pious and devoted mother will serve to recall to memory the many happy hours which they have spent in her company. As a Christian, none ever lived a more exemplary life. She knew her duty to God and man, and knowing it, performed it fully. When sorrow came she was ever humble and submissive; when joy came, she was grateful, every looking to the source from whence it came. Being a generous and liberal friend, she has left many to mourn her loss, together with a devoted husband and five surviving children. May God sustain them in their bereavement. Her funeral sermon was preached at the church of which she was a member, (Branch's) by the Rev. G. Mason, on the 11 th inst., from these words: For He must reign till he hath put all enemies under his feet. The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death."
