Posthumous Silver Star citation:

The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Warren A. Bender (MCSN: 844035), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Rifleman serving with Company I, Third Battalion, Twenty-Third Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima in the Volcano Islands, from 21 to 26 February 1945. When his platoon was pinned down by intense enemy resistance on 21 February, Private First Class Bender unhesitatingly pushed ahead with another Marine through withering machine gun fire and destroyed the hostile gun emplacement, thereby enabling his platoon to advance. On 26 February, observing more than fifteen of the enemy in a cave forward of the lines, he volunteered to advance and destroy the position, personally accounting for eight of the Japanese. His fearless initiative and courageous disregard for his own personal safety reflect the highest credit upon Private First Class Bender and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
