The eldest child of his parents, father of nine children with his wife Ann Esseltine, who he married on June 12, 1836 at Elmira, New York. The children are: Catherine, Henry, Mary, Eliza, Joel, Amelia, James, Susan E.,and Margaret.
Philip enlisted Jun 5, 1864 into Co. A, 161st Reg't., New York Volunteer Infantry. His brother Moses, who was also buried at Chalmette National, but unmarked, had signed up a few days later, joining the same outfit, on Jan 12. Their Company was involved in several campaigns during their time - the Red River Campaign - Mar 10 to 22, Henderson Hill, Mar 21, Wilson's Farm Apr 7, Sabine Crossroads Apr 8, Pleasant Hill, on the 9th, Cane River Crossing Apr 23, Clouterville on the 24th and Cheneville, May 2. They died within 3 days of each other at the Barracks Hospital near Brashear City.
