Merril died peacefully at his daughter's home in Spokane, Washington, seven months after a massive stroke. Born to William George and Mildred June Connor in Seattle, Washington, he was the youngest of four children. He was four years old when the family moved to Garden Grove, California.

Merril was athletic and loved most sports. His favorite teams were the Dodgers, Rams and the UW Huskies. After high school, he enlisted in the Marine Corps serving in Bravo Company 1st Battalion, 9th Marines 3rd Marine Division. He served in Vietnam and returned as a Lance Corporal.

After his service, he married and had his only child Dawn Marie. He moved to Oregon, in 1977, and met his second wife and became a stepfather to Rachel and Cory Cummings.

Deciding late in life to go back to school, he received his A.A. degree from Umpqua Community College with a bachelor's of science degree in human services from the University of Oregon.

He met his third wife and best friend Jean Barneburg becoming a stepfather to Dustin and Matt Barneburg.

He joins his parents, all his siblings, Cory and Rachel, many dogs and his loving wife in heaven. He will be forever remembered and deeply missed by Dawn and Phil Selfe, Dustin and Jessica Barneburg, Matt and Kelly Barneburg, Glen and Lisa Good, many nieces and nephews and his grandchildren TJ, Tyler and Kaylee.

Umpqua Valley Funeral Directors are in charge of arrangements. A service will be held at 1 p.m. on Dec. 1, 2023, at the Roseburg National Cemetery.
