Cheryl Anne Brackin-Burris was born on September 19, 1958, to Natalie L. James and the late J.B. Brackin at Columbus Hospital in Newark, New Jersey. She attended school in Newark until 10th grade when she attended and graduated from Clifford J. Scott High School in East Orange, New Jersey in June of 1975. In 1977 Cheryl gave birth to her only daughter, Kelley Burris. She continued to work full-time and in 1982 she married Kelley's father, Reginald Burris. At that time, she continued working full-time and spending time with family.

After her daughter left home for college, Cheryl herself enrolled in Essex County College to pursue a degree in accounting. In 1997 Cheryl began working at Community Access Unlimited where she worked in the accounting department for almost 17 years. Cheryl continued to spend her time traveling and enjoying the company of family and friends and never missed an opportunity to attend a cookout. You could always find her at a table playing spades and having a ball.

In 2014 after retiring, Cheryl moved to Columbia, South Carolina with her daughter and three grandchildren. In 2021 Cheryl relocated to Milford, Delaware to be closer to her mom.

Cheryl leaves behind her mom, Natalie L. James; two brothers, Donald Brackin and Carl Brackin; her daughter, Kelley Burris; three grandchildren, Prince Kendu Burris, Rayshon Hawthorne Jr. and Kaeden Hawthorne; and an enormous host of family and friends who she loved dearly.
