114 years ago my mother was born near Oatmeal in Burnet County, TX. She was the fourth child and third daughter of George and Molly Jackson. Both her Jackson and her Holloway grandmothers were in attendance that day and both expected the baby to be named after them. So she got two middle names as the young parents had already selected Avis as her name. She grew up at Oatmeal and attended the Oatmeal School through the seventh grade. Her parents then managed to send several of their older children to High School in Burnet. This was accomplished by her mother and all the children boarding in Burnet during the school term. This was a tremendous sacrifice on their part as my grandfather had to stay on the farm and do everything there by himself. I really appreciate this. Sadly Molly passed away completely unexpectedly at age 46 and the younger children of the 11 did not get this advantage.

My mother married Virgil Lewis, a widower with two young children, Lessie and Elroy. They were joined by Joan and Donald and some years later, myself.

After living on the banks of the Colorado River 14 years and experiencing a terrible flood in 1935, my parent sold their land to the LCRA and bought a place at Fairland. During this time my sister and brother attended school at Marble Falls. Then they moved to Burnet in 1941 to a place 2 miles from town. They all loved their new home. Especially the excitement of having electricity for the first time.
