Obituary, Chadwick Funeral Service (New London, NH), Wed, 8 Nov 2023:

Donald Gene Stanphill, a cherished husband, father, and esteemed veteran, passed away on October 31, 2023, at the age of 91 in Livingston, Montana. He was born on November 22, 1931, in Marble, Arkansas, nestled in the Ozark Mountains, to A.J. and Flossie Stanphill. When he was 10 years old, his family moved to Portland, Oregon, so that his father could work in the shipyards to support the war effort. After graduating from Roosevelt High School, he bravely served his country in the United States Navy for 4 years, spending time in Japan and on Kwajalein Island, during the Korean War. In 1957, Gene began a rewarding career at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA).

In February 1958 Gene's sister introduced him to Carolyn Davidson, and they were married in August of the same year. They were blessed with a daughter, Patricia Ann, in 1960, and a son, James Brian, in 1963. Gene loved being a soccer coach for the kids as they were growing and loved the game so much that he also joined an adult soccer league.

Gene served for an impressive 34 years at UCLA. He started in electrical maintenance and spent the last 17 years or his career as a driver and ophthalmic assistant for "Uncle Claude's" mobile eye clinic (a Philanthropic endeavor), which provided vital eye care services to underserved communities. His compassionate work often took him into poverty-stricken areas, where he dedicated himself to helping both children and the elderly, leaving a lasting impact on the communities he served.

After retiring in 1991, Gene and his beloved wife Carolyn moved to Newbury, New Hampshire, where they found joy and contentment in their new home.

Gene loved the outdoors, all sports ("Go Red Sox!"), and was an avid amateur photographer, he was rarely seen without a camera around his neck. He had a keen eye for capturing the beauty in everyday life and nature. Gene selflessly dedicated 20 years of his life in retirement to The Council on Aging at Chapin senior center, serving as a driver and the go-to "Mr. Fix-It" for the community.

Gene's dedication to serving others, whether in the military, during his professional career, through his community activities, or through his passion for sports and photography, was a testament to his unwavering compassion and commitment. Gene will be remembered for his quirky humor, his selflessness and giving nature, and his love of the outdoors and sports. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched.

Gene is predeceased by his wife Carolyn and sister Shirley Kozlowski. Gene is survived by son James & Sharon Stanphill, daughter Patricia & Matt Jarvis, brother Jay and Louise Stanphill and sister Judith Pond, nieces Diane and Jill Davidson, and grandchildren Elizabeth, Benjamin and Rachel Stanphill.

Carolyn & Gene were married for 62 years and are now together again.

We will forever cherish the memories and the impact Gene had on our lives.

A funeral service in honor of Gene Stanphill will be held at Chadwick Funeral Home, 235 Main Street, New London, NH 03257, at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday the 18th of November. Friends and family are invited to attend and pay their respects.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Chapin Senior Center P.O. Box 1263 New London, NH 03257 or any Veteran Organization, reflecting Gene's lifelong dedication to helping those in need.
