Walter McIndoo traded in his beautiful home in Kokomo, Indiana for an even more beautiful forever-home with Jesus on October 27, 2023. Walt was born November 16, 1934, in Terre Haute, Indiana to his late parents, Chester and Marjorie McIndoo. He was the oldest of two children. Walt graduated from Rose Poly-technological Institute (Rose-Hulman) with his BS in Electrical Engineering in 1956, and later his MS in Engineering Science from Purdue University in 1965.

In between these two academic achievements, Walt married his high school sweetheart, Shirley Ann Genung in 1956. They moved to Kokomo in 1957 where he began his career with Delco Electronics, and they had their three children: Nancy, Tim and Susan.

During his 36-year career with Delco, Walt grew from Design Engineer to Product Supervisor, to Supervisor of Engineering, to Plant Manager, and finally to Director of the Semiconductor Business Unit. After retiring from General Motors in 1992, Walt served as a Task Force Member of Curriculum, and later as the Chairman for Career Services for Rose Hulman from 1992-1997. During Walt's education and early years with Delco, he also served in both the Navy and Army Reserves.

Walt was passionate about serving his community. He was a member of the Board of Directors for the Howard Community Hospital Endowment from 1980-1986. He served on the Member Advisory Council for the Purdue University School of Technology from 1987-1992. He served on the Board of Directors for the YMCA from 1982-1997, and as Board President from 1991-1992. From 1992-1993, he served on the Industrial Task Force to the Governor of Indiana. And in 1991, he received the Distinguished Service Award from the Indiana Electronics Manufacturers Association.

Though Walt's accomplishments in business and community service are many and noteworthy, his greatest joy and highest priority was following Jesus. His love for the Lord began at a young age. He was a member of the Fifth and McKeen Church of Christ in Terre Haute, which he attended with his family. After moving to Kokomo, Walt and Shirley served with the Courtland Avenue Church of Christ, and then helped start the Alto Road Church of Christ, which later became the Center Road Church of Christ.

Walt's faith became central to everything else in his life. He loved the church, and invested himself fully through teaching classes, leading small groups, preaching, giving generously to support the church's ministries, and serving as an elder for many years. He was passionate about God's word, and spent much of his time poring over scripture. He loved to share the good news of Jesus with anyone who would listen, and he strove to show the love of God to others in the way he treated them. In every place and person, Walt saw an opportunity to share his faith: at work, around town, through phone calls and letters, and visits to the hospital—even when he was the patient! But he especially loved to share his faith in his home, with his wife Shirley. With boundless hospitality, together they welcomed countless people to their home to talk about God. Many of you have likely been recipients of Walt and Shirley's hospitality and deep generosity.

Walt cherished his family. He was a loving and intentional husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He led his family in faith through instruction and by example. He was a jovial soul, who filled his home with resonant singing and boisterous laughter. He loved to travel with family and friends. He and Shirley saw the world together in their retirement years, traveling to several continents.

He loved to learn, and believed that God designed us to be curious and diligent. He enjoyed studying science, and did not see a discrepancy between faith and the exciting world of scientific discovery. He imparted to his family the importance of education, and planned and prepared for many years to support his children and grandchildren in their educational pursuits.

Walt is survived by his daughters, Nancy Periman (and William) of Kokomo, Susan McLaughlin (and Don) of Atlanta, Georgia, and daughter-in-law Wendy McIndoo of Rochester, Indiana, along with many beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Walt was preceded in death by his parents, Chester and Marjorie McIndoo, his sister Marilyn Winegar, his son, Tim McIndoo, and wife, Shirley McIndoo.

Walt would have wanted everyone to know, "It is by grace you have been saved, through faith-and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God" (Ephesians 2:8-9). He believed this with all of his heart and was not deceived by any accomplishment of his own.

"Blessed are those who die in the Lord. Yes, says the Spirit, they are blessed indeed, for they will rest from their hard work; for their good deeds follow them!" Revelation 14:13
